The African Professionals Network, APNET, was founded in 2010 by African alumni of Northern Kentucky University who recognized the need for a structured platform to support professional advancement, connection, and community engagement. What began as conversations among peers about education, career growth, and integration into new communities evolved into a growing network committed to helping individuals of African descent build meaningful relationships, complete their education, and pursue professional success.

As participation expanded and programming matured, APNET formally incorporated as a nonprofit organization in 2016 and obtained 501(c)(3) status. This milestone marked the transition from a grassroots network to an institutional platform positioned for long term impact, accountability, and regional collaboration.

Today, APNET serves professionals across the African diaspora and their allies as a leadership platform dedicated to professional growth, cultural engagement, and community impact. Through signature events, youth and workforce initiatives, and strategic partnerships, APNET advances economic mobility, strengthens cross-cultural collaboration, and contributes to the social and economic vitality of the region. While the organization has evolved in scope and scale, it remains grounded in its founding commitment to excellence, connection, and collective advancement.

APNET was established by four individuals who collaborated to form the inaugural chapter and shape the organization’s early vision and structure. The Founders, Prince Ellis, Ruth Nduta Ellis, Frederick Odame, and Peter Nyame, laid the foundation for the organization’s governance, programming, and long-term direction. In accordance with APNET’s governing documents, Founder designation is reserved exclusively for these individuals in recognition of their role in formally establishing the organization.

During its formative years, APNET was strengthened by dedicated early supporters who believed in the mission and contributed to building its credibility and momentum. Founding Members, including Angella Maingi, Clara Matonhodze, Jane Muindi, and others, played a meaningful role in shaping the organization’s culture through volunteerism, leadership, event participation, and community outreach. Their commitment helped establish APNET as a trusted platform for professional connection and collaboration within the region.
